Tips for better receipt photos and common issues

Troubleshooting Photo Quality

Getting clear receipt photos is key to accurate extraction. Here's how to fix common issues.

The Perfect Receipt Photo

Good Photo Checklist:
  • Receipt is flat on a surface
  • Entire receipt is visible (especially totals)
  • Good lighting without shadows
  • Camera is steady (no blur)
  • Receipt is right-side up

Common Problems and Fixes

"I couldn't read that clearly"

This means the AI couldn't extract key data. Try:

1. Flatten the receipt completely

2. Move to better lighting

3. Avoid glare from overhead lights

4. Make sure the total is visible

Blurry Photos
  • Hold the phone steady for 1-2 seconds
  • Tap the screen to focus before shooting
  • Use good lighting so the camera doesn't need to compensate
Faded Thermal Receipts
  • Take photos quickly - thermal paper fades
  • Use flash if needed
  • Consider asking for email receipts from vendors
Crumpled Receipts
  • Flatten as much as possible
  • Hold down edges that curl up
  • Shoot from directly above

After Multiple Failed Attempts

If you've tried 2-3 times and it still fails:

1. The receipt is flagged for Manual Review

2. You'll see it in the Exceptions dashboard

3. A producer can manually enter the data

4. You'll receive confirmation once it's processed

Unsupported Receipt Types

These may have trouble:

  • Handwritten receipts
  • Very long receipts (scroll shots needed)
  • Receipts in languages other than English
  • Carbon copy receipts
