TCPA compliance and SMS consent requirements

Understanding Opt-In Consent

Olivine follows TCPA (Telephone Consumer Protection Act) guidelines for SMS.

Why Opt-In Is Required

  • Legal requirement: TCPA requires explicit consent for business texts
  • Best practice: Ensures crew wants to receive messages
  • Opt-out protection: Crew can stop messages anytime

The Opt-In Flow

1. You add a crew member with their phone number

2. They receive: "Reply YES to opt in to [Production Name]"

3. They reply YES (or equivalent)

4. Status changes from Pending to Opted In

5. They can now submit receipts

Valid Opt-In Responses

These are accepted as consent:

  • YES, Y, Yeah, Yep
  • OK, Okay
  • I agree, Agree

Opt-Out

Crew can text STOP at any time:

  • Immediately stops all messages
  • Status changes to "Opted Out"
  • They can text START to re-subscribe

What If Someone Doesn't Opt In?

  • They won't be able to submit receipts via SMS
  • You can resend the opt-in request
  • Consider confirming their phone number
  • Some carriers block short codes—try a different number
